A goal is a statement in writing with a firm date fixed to it describing some change, gain or achievement.

From this description, it is clear that the majority of us have many dreams, wishes or fancies but unless these are committed to writing and have specific time frames fixed to them, they are not true goals.

Goals can be the most motivating forces in the world.  With them, we can achieve anything we set our minds to.  Without them, we drift aimlessly.

Goals are also extremely personal; they belong to the people who set them.  True success can never be achieved by having goals set for you by another person.  A goal can only become your own when it is believable in your own eyes. 

Your goals must move you towards action.


  • Goals provide direction;
  • Goals tell you how far you have travelled;
  • Goals help you make your overall vision attainable;
  • Goals clarify everyone’s role;
  • Goals give people something to strive for.

For goals to be useful, they have to link directly to the vision that is at the end of the road.


It is important that place goals into the following categories:

  • Career
  • Family
  • Health
  • Wealth

These four categories can be seen as the “legs of a table”, which support us and help us grow.  It is important to note that as we change the length of any one of the legs, the others become unbalanced.  In setting goals it is essential therefore to balance these four areas and set goals in each of the four categories.

Career Goals:

Be pro-active in designing your own paths and setting out to achieve them.

Family Goals:

The more a family works together towards the achievement of specific goals, the closer the family members draw to one another.  The closer the family draws together, the quicker and easier a goal is attained.

Health Goals:

The major health goals seem to be: 

  • Lose Weight,
  • Eat Healthier,
  • Exercise more, and
  • Stop Smoking.
Wealth Goals:

Money should be seen as a means toward an end and not the end itself.

Setting SMART Goals

S   –  Specific

M   –  Measurable

A   –  Achievable

R  –  Realistic

T  –  Timeous


Be specific and know what you want to achieve.  Write it down.  A dream is a goal written down.  Always state your goal in positive terms. 

The more precisely a goal is defined, the greater the challenge to reach it.  It is therefore important that you should take the time to know exactly what you want to achieve.


Measure your goal and decided how you are going to achieve it.  Set up a definite plan of action and keep to it.  If goals are not measurable then we have no means of knowing when we have attained them.


Set achievable goals. If you set unachievable goals, you will soon lose sight of it and become disheartened half way through or even fail at the end.  Goals are like guide missiles.  As we get closer to the target, you have to keep changing the course to make sure that you eventually attain your goal.


Be realistic when setting your goals.  Know your limitations.


Set a specific time frame in which you want to attain your goal.  Do not be too perfect and waste time.  Be flexible.  It is important to constantly change and upgrade your goal in line with current expectations and desires.



List the positive, specific actions that you need to take to make sure you reach your goal.


List the specific actions that you need to avoid in order to ensure you reach your goal.


Write down all the factors in your favour to help you reach the goal.


List any factors that are working against you in the attainment of your goal and any problem areas that may cause you to stumble along the way.


Goals can also be divided into the following categories:

Short-term Goals:

Motivates us here and right now.  An example of a short term goal is a specific target set, ranging from a few days to weeks and even months.

Medium-term Goals:

Keeps us moving towards long-term goals which are for years to come.  These goals usually range from one to three years.  These could be a new career or a promotion.

Long-Term Goals:

A long-term goal is anything more than three years and could even range up to fifty year
