‘Creativity is intelligence having fun” ~ Albert Einstein

I’m sure most of us think we don’t possess an artistic bone in our bodies.  We think web designing, writing, cooking, art or music are the only forms of being artistic.  We deem artists of any kind as people who are blessed with special gifts.  Your assumptions would be wrong.   All of us have creativity inside of us – some just have to dig a little deeper to find it.  In layman terms, creativity is simply looking at things a little differently.

Creativity allows us to stretch our minds and our imaginations.  In many ways, creativity is the untraining of one’s mind to see things in a new, different light.  It allows us to do new and exciting things and it engages us to take a step closer to reaching our potential.  Creative people are smart, but they can maintain their sense of wonder, curiosity and the ability to look at the world with fresh eyes.  While some people are born with a creative personality it is reassuring to know that we can learn to incorporate creative ideas into our daily lives.

Here is a list nobody told you about finding your inner creative beast.

Anyone Can Do It!

If you want to be creative, just do it.  Don’t overthink or overanalyse.  Forget about the prejudice that creativity is saved for the select few.  Be willing to learn and have a strong desire to start.  Once you’ve found that one thing that captures your attention, you will be amazed at how many hours you can remain focussed on that specific task.   So get going – start today.

Creativity Can Be Improved

Improve your creativity by experimenting, exploring, questioning and importantly, using your imagination.  By thinking outside the box, the willingness to do some research and ask questions, are all ways you stimulate your creativity.  Looking for quick inspiration?  Become aware of what’s happening around you.

All Ideas Are Good Ideas

Just one idea can create a domino effect.  Creativity happens when unrelated existing ideas collide to form new ideas.  The creative muscle can be developed through constant exercise.  Push past your comfort zone and revel in the burst of new and exciting ideas.

Look Out The Window

Creativity comes from the world around you.  Most people try too hard to get into the ‘creative zone’ and then find themselves at a lack of inspiration.  Forget about what you think creativity is supposed to be.  You mistakenly think the world is made of rules.  It isn’t.  The world is made of people and people are made of emotions.  The goal should always be what your creative ideas make you and others feel.

Creativity is Infinite

Everything you see is a creation.  Steve Jobs once said that we need to shake off the outdated notion that life is there and you’re just going to live in it.  Instead, make your mark on it.  Once you’ve learned that, you will never be the same again.  Hold tightly onto your sense of wonder.

Creativity is a Conscious Decision

Creativity takes work, time, energy and dedication.  Being creative is a choice.  Every morning when you wake up, decide to look for creative inspiration throughout the day.  Document everything.  Buy a notebook and write down any thoughts you encounter as you go about your day.   Dr Seuss summed it up best: ‘Think left, think right and think low and think high.  Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try.’

Be The Best Version of  YOU!

Remember, you can create whatever you want.  Write about what you would want to read.  Build what you want to use.  Cook what you want to eat.  Share your creations with the world.   If the world responds positively – great!   If it doesn’t – it doesn’t matter either!  At least you’re doing what you enjoy and maybe the future might hold interesting things.   The most important thing to remember is to be creative for you.

Move past the self-imposed barriers of your mind that hold you back and start creating!
