DAILY HABITS FOR BODY AND SOUL

You will never change your life until you change something you do daily ~ Mike Murdock

We live in a complex world, one where we barely have time for one another, let alone for ourselves.  We are employers or employees, wives, partners, parents, friends, confidants, motivators, psychologists, coaches, taxis, to name a few.  Being everything to everyone often leads us to paths of self-destruction when we give so much of ourselves that we don’t leave time for ourselves.  We need to care enough about ourselves, give ourselves time to replenish our energy, to recharge our batteries, to debrief from everyone else’s worries and problems.

Now I know it is difficult to find time for ourselves, but you must be a little selfish, step away from all of this and look after our wellbeing.  We need to do this every day.  You don’t have to do all of these every day, but starting with one thing a day, will lead to more.

Here are 10 daily habits that will change your life.

1 Hour of Exercise

The word “exercise” brings up visions of gyms and sweaty runners.  You don’t have to be a gym bunny in order to be fit. You can put on your walking shoes and take a walk around your neighbourhood or in a park.  You could also join a sports club where they have many activities to keep fit.

If you prefer exercising in private, you could dance to your favourite songs, play with your children or pets in the garden or you can log onto the internet and following an online programme.  There really is no excuse to be active, even if it is just for 20 minutes a day.

2 Litres of Water

We all know what the benefits of water is, that our bodies need it to function optimally every day.  If you don’t like the taste of plain water, infuse it with your favourite fruit and herbs.

3 Cups of Tea

Tea has been around for centuries and there is a good reason for this.  The benefits include:

  • It contains antioxidants
  • It has less caffeine than coffee
  • It may reduce the risk of a heart attack and stroke

Herbal teas can be enjoyed hot or cold and there are many delicious varieties available.  Drinking tea also counts towards your 2 litres of water per day.

4 Colours on the Plate

There is a reason why your mothers told you to eat to your vegetables.  The natural pigments (or phytonutrients) in vegetables have different protective qualities.  Besides the nutritional values this brings, it is also colourful and more appealing to eat.

5 Minutes of Meditation

Meditation is not all about people wearing leather sandals and tie-died clothing.  There is scientific proof that meditation benefits the mind, body and soul.  Take 5 minutes to escape from a busy or stressful day, readjust your focus.  The benefits of meditation include:

  • Enhancing self-awareness
  • Lengthening your attention span

It is also successfully used in rehab where substance abusers are taught this as part of coping mechanisms.

6 Songs that motivate you

People have been identifying with song lyrics for many years.  Nothing lifts your mood like listening to your favourite upbeat song.  Even Scissor Sister’s song “I don’t feel like dancing” makes you want to get up and dance!  Listen to your favourite songs while stuck in traffic, while cooking or while exercising.

7 Minutes of Laughter

Laughter really is the best medicine!  Here are some of the health benefits that laughing has to offer:

  • Laughter relaxes the body
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Triggers and releases endorphins
  • Protects your heart
  • Helps you stay mentally healthy
8 Hours of Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential to our physical health and emotional wellbeing.  The benefits of good sleep should never be underestimated and getting proper rest on a regular basis isn’t just a good idea, it’s an essential one.

9 Pages of a Book

Reading is known for strengthening the brain, building vocabulary, reducing stress and aiding sleep.  Reading also allows you to escape to another world, it fuels the imagination and takes you places you have never been before.  There really is a wonderful world of books out there.

10 Reasons to be Thankful

A great idea is to keep a small journal next to your bed and, every night before you go to be, write down things you are thankful for.  You may not have 10 things each day but staring with one or two is wonderful. Think outside the usual “food, shelter, family” boxes and think of things like freedom, friendships, etc.
